A middle school social studies teacher at Forsyth Country Day School provides a safe, nurturing environment for students in his or her classroom, utilizing the school’s instructional program. The teacher works to create meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning experiences in order to continue to build strong foundational skills for lifelong learning. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods including individual and small group instruction to meet the needs of students with varying abilities, attitudes, and backgrounds.
  • Encourages an inclusive classroom that accepts the different perspectives and backgrounds of the students and elicits a greater understanding of the world around them with a global perspective.
  • Provides tutorials as necessary for students in need of extra academic support.
  • Advises a homeroom section
  • Communicates regularly with parents of students including conducting conferences.
  • Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Participates in divisional, team, and all faculty meetings.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and conducts oneself professionally with respect to students, faculty, parents and the community.
  • Vigorously pursues knowledge of the areas and level taught.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

PREFERENCES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • 3 or more years of teaching experience, preferably in grades 6-8
  • Teaching license in secondary history preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Regularly required to walk, including across uneven ground, talk, hear, reach with hands and arms, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to sit and stand throughout the day, and bend, kneel, or squat to be at eye level with children.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and have basic knowledge of Google Workspace
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed
  • Must be able to utilize oral and written communication skills effectively
