Duke School (DS), an independent, project-based preschool through eighth grade school, offers an exceptional learning experience. In the middle school, students learn math, science, language arts, Spanish, and social studies in discrete classes, and in a dedicated project class carry out three projects which unite disciplines and place a premium on student inquiry and choice. Students also take classes in visual art, performing arts, physical education and learn media literacy from our media specialists; 5th and 6th graders take instrumental music. This engaging and rigorous environment challenges students to forge their own paths to learning. Each grade in the middle division features four subject-area teachers who both teach their discrete curriculum and collaborate to plan, deliver, and evaluate our project curriculum.
The Middle School Library Media Specialist collaborates with our other middle school librarian to promote students’ life-long reading practice, teach information literacy, manage our flexibly scheduled library, and coordinate volunteers. The librarians also collaborate with grade-level teachers to support teaching in their subject areas as well as their project curriculum. Candidates should have knowledge of current trends in library services for and with middle grade students and knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities. The candidate should also possess a deep understanding of middle school philosophy and practice, as well as a commitment to the academic and social/emotional growth of students. Being a team player and collaborator are essential attributes for this position.
We are seeking an exceptional Middle School Media Specialist to begin in August, 2025. The position is for 80% of full time (4 days/week). A Master’s degree in library science with specialized courses in school library-related topics plus fieldwork (i.e., internship) in a school library media center and 3-5 years of experience is preferred.
