Grades 1-5 Science Teacher

The Lower School Science Teacher is responsible for developing and delivering a dynamic, age-appropriate science curriculum that builds core knowledge and foundational scientific skills while fostering curiosity and a love for learning. This role emphasizes hands-on exploration, inquiry-based learning, and creative teaching strategies to inspire young learners to engage with the natural world.

The teacher will create a nurturing environment that promotes critical thinking and scientific discovery, while also demonstrating a passion for making meaningful connections—between disciplines, ideas, and the students’ everyday experiences. Collaboration with colleagues to align curriculum with best practices and adapting instruction to meet diverse needs are essential to ensuring a strong foundation for lifelong scientific literacy.

 

Duties and responsibilities

Core duties:

  • Foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity in the classroom, creating a space where all children can thrive.
  • Develop and implement engaging and age-appropriate science lessons for all our students across Grades 1-5.
  • Cultivate curiosity and a love for learning through hands-on and interactive learning, combined with a breath of scientific knowledge.
  • Cultivate perseverance and modeling strategies for dealing with frustration - essential for young children.
  • Seek opportunities to further innovate the science curriculum and potentially through collaboration with our disciplines.
  • Encourage innovation and critical thinking skills through scientific thinking.
  • Build foundational competency in students by providing opportunities for skill development in science.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the whole school to ensure subject consistency and create opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.

 

Program related:

  • Ensure that our science program continues to develop so that the students flourish as they take the upper school science curriculum.
  • Have an in-depth working knowledge of the subject including theory, methods, programmes of study and learning objectives as well as being familiar with state standards and new models of teaching and learning.
  • Ensure our provision is enhanced beyond the typical and  provides educational excellence across all grades.
  • Build and maintain a strong partnership with the Triad Science teacher and the Upper School Science faculty.
  • Set a model of excellence in classroom practice i.e. curriculum design, pedagogy, challenging content and meeting the needs of a diverse group of learners.
  • Take an active role in the utilization of the new SEED Center development, creating innovative ways for students to use the space and opportunities for scientific inquiry.
  • With support from the Division Director: 
    • monitor long term and medium term planning of the subject for, ensuring continuity and progression cross the curriculum, and, where appropriate differentiation
    • Oversee and review curriculum information for parents
    • Manage the procurement, storage and use of materials and equipment
  • Integrate the principles of Responsive Classroom and Project Zero methodology into the program.

Communication Skills:

  • Clear communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts in a simple and engaging manner.

  • Effective classroom management skills to create a positive and safe learning environment.
  • Setting expectations and maintaining discipline while fostering creativity.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Developing fair and constructive assessment methods for student projects.
  • Providing timely and meaningful feedback to support student growth.

  • Inspiring students to explore and pursue interests in these fields.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
  • Teaching certification with a focus on science education is desirable.
  • Experience in developing and delivering engaging and interactive lessons.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • ​​Excellent ability in written and spoken English.
