Position Title:       Middle School, Band Instructor

Department:         Middle School

Reports To:           Head of the Middle School

FLSA:                     Exempt

Position Purpose:  The Middle School Band Instructor is responsible for preparing curriculum, teaching Band at the middle school level, and creating a dynamic learning environment for students in the class.

Essential Functions

  • Teaches individuals or groups - instrumental: woodwind, brass, percussion
  • Plans daily classroom work based on curriculum requirements
  • Evaluates students’ aptitudes to determine suitable instrument for beginner (instrumental)
  • Proficient as musician to demonstrate musical scales, tones, and rhythm
  • Instructs students in music theory, harmony, score and sight reading, composition, music appreciation
  • Interacts well with students to recruit/retain them to the music program
  • Conducts group rehearsals and instructs and coaches members in their individual parts, in fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.
  • Leads Band groups in regular and special performances for school program and concerts
  • Collaborate with other teachers in the development of shared curriculum
  • Other duties as assigned including that of advisor to small group of students within a grade level

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or post graduate work in music or music education
  • A minimum of two years teaching band.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated skills as musician and teacher
